Chronicling the Players who represented Scotland in the 1970’s.

We start with the First match of the decade v Northern Ireland April 18th, 1970.

Player #1

Bobby Clark of Aberdeen. First capped on November 22nd, 1967, Bobby won 17 caps altogether and was part of the squad that travelled to Argentina in 1978.

Player #2

David Hay of Celtic, who made his debut in the Northern Ireland match. David is seen below prior to the World Cup match v Yugoslavia in 1974 which would be his last Scotland outing. Davie won 27 caps in total.

Player#3

Billy Dickson of Kilmarnock who also made his debut v Northern Ireland in April 1970. Billy won five caps in total all coming in 1970/71.

Player #4

Winning his sixth of nine caps that day of April 18th, 1970 v Northern Ireland was Frank McLintock of Arsenal.

Winning his 21st of 28 caps that day of April 18th, 1970 v Northern Ireland was Ronnie McKinnon of Rangers.

Player #6

Winning the 3rd of his 16 caps that day of April 18th, 1970 v Northern Ireland was Newcastle’s Bobby Moncur.

Player #7

Winning the 6th of his 8 caps that day of April 18th, 1970 v Northern Ireland was winger Tommy McLean. All of Tommy’s caps came as a Kilmarnock player.

Player #8

Also making his debut v Northern Ireland in April 1970 was Willie Carr of Coventry City. Willie won six caps and was never in a losing side.

Player #9.

Also making his debut v Northern Ireland in April 1970 was John O’Hare of Derby County. Seen here in his 2nd match v Wales a few days later. John won 13 caps & scored 5 goals including the winner on his debut.

Player #10

Winning the 20th of his 22 caps that day of April 18th, 1970 v Northern Ireland was Alan Gilzean.

Alan won 5 caps with Dundee & 17 with Spurs, scoring 12 goals in total. He is seen here v Cyprus, May 1969.

Player #11

Winning the 9th of his 22 caps that day of April 18th, 1970 v Northern Ireland was Willie Johnston.

Willie won 10 caps with Rangers & 12 with West Brom He is seen here v England June 1977.

Player #12

Coming on as a substitute and winning the 10th of his 21 caps that day of April 18th, 1970 v Northern Ireland was Colin Stein of Rangers.
Stein scored 10 goals in his first nine matches for Scotland but never scored beyond that. His last four caps came at Coventry City.

Player #13.

Moving to the game v Wales on April 22nd, 1970 that ended 0-0. Making his first appearance of the 1970s was keeper Jim Cruickshank of Hearts. Jim was winning his 5th of 9 caps.

Player #14.

Also making his first appearance of the 1970s in the Wales match of April 1970 was full back Willie Callaghan of Dunfermline. Willie was winning his sixth and final cap.

Player #15.

Also making his first appearance of the 1970s in the Wales match of April 1970 was John Greig of Rangers. John was winning his 37th of 44 caps in total.



Player #16

Making his only appearance of the 1970s in the Wales match of April 1970 was Bobby Lennox. Bobby won his tenth and final cap that night. Seen here after scoring in the 1967 match v England at Wembley.

Player #17

Making his first appearance of the 1970s in 0-0 draw with England at Hampden, April 25th 1970 was Tommy Gemmell of Celtic. Tommy was winning his 17th cap of 18 in total.

Player #18.

Also making his first appearance of the 1970s in 0-0 draw with England at Hampden, April 25th 1970 was Jimmy Johnstone of Celtic. Jimmy was winning his 10th cap of 23 in total.

Player #19. Making his first appearance for Scotland in the 1970’s in the 1-0 victory over Denmark on November 11th, 1970 was Pat Stanton of Hibs. Pat was winning his 5th of 16 caps.

Player #20.

Making his first appearance for Scotland in the 1970’s in the 1-0 victory over Denmark on November 11th, 1970 was Peter Cormack of Nottingham Forest. Peter was winning his fifth cap of nine. It was his first with Forest with his first four coming at Hibs.

Player #21. Making his debut appearance for Scotland in the 1-0 victory over Denmark on November 11th, 1970 was Sandy Jardine of Rangers. Sandy was to win 38 caps in total.

Player #22. February 3rd 1971 and Archie Gemmill of Derby County makes his debut for Scotland in a 3-0 loss to Belgium. Archie was to win 43 caps in total scoring 8 goals.

Player #23. February 3rd 1971 and Charlie Cooke makes his first appearance for Scotland the 1970’s in a 3-0 loss to Belgium. Charlie was winning the 14th of his 16 caps.

Player #24. February 3rd 1971 and Tony Green of Blackpool makes his debut for Scotland in a 3-0 loss to Belgium. Tony won six caps as sadly injury meant his career was cut short.

Player #25. February 3rd 1971 and Jim Forrest of Aberdeen makes his first appearance for Scotland the 1970’s in a 3-0 loss to Belgium. Jim was winning his third of five caps. Seen here much earlier v Italy in 1965.

Player #26. April 21st 1971 and Jim Brogan of Celtic makes his debut appearance for Scotland in a 2-0 loss to Portugal. Jim won 4 caps overall and is seen below left with Frank McLintock & Bobby Clark prior to the match v Wales in May 1971.

Player #27. April 21st 1971 and Willie Henderson of Rangers makes his first and only appearance for Scotland in the 1970’s in a 2-0 loss to Portugal. Willie won 29 caps in total.

Player #28. April 21st 1971 and Jim McCalliog of Wolves makes his first and only appearance for Scotland in the 1970’s in a 2-0 loss to Portugal. Jim seen here with Ronnie Simpson at Wembley 1967 won 10 caps overall.


Player #29. April 21st 1971 and Davie Robb of Aberdeen makes his debut appearance for Scotland in a 2-0 loss to Portugal. Davie won five caps for Scotland. Seen here in an old washed out Scotland top which were regularly used in training.

Player #30. April 21st 1971 and Drew Jarvie of Airdrie makes his debut appearance for Scotland in a 2-0 loss to Portugal. Drew won three caps for Scotland. Seen here with manager Bobby Brown.

Player #31. Finally on 15th May, 1971 Billy Bremner makes his first appearance of the 1970’s in a 0-0 draw with Wales on a mud soaked Ninian Park. Billy was winning his 24th cap of his 54 caps total.

Player #32. 15th May, 1971 and Peter Lorimer of Leeds makes his first appearance of the 1970’s in a 0-0 draw with Wales on a mud soaked Ninian Park. Peter was winning the 2nd of his 21 caps.

Player #33. 15th May, 1971 and Eddie Gray, also of Leeds United makes his first appearance of the 1970’s in a 0-0 draw with Wales at Ninian Park. Eddie was winning the 5th of his 12 caps .

Player #34. May 18th 1971 and Hugh Curran of Wolves makes his first appearance for Scotland in the 1970s in a 1-0 loss to Northern Ireland at Hampden. Hugh was winning his 2nd of five caps for Scotland.

Player #35. May 18th 1971 and Frank Munro of Wolves makes his debut appearance for Scotland in a 1-0 loss to Northern Ireland. Frank was to win nine caps in total and is seen here at Wembley a few days later.

Player #36. June 9th 1971 and Tom Forsyth of Motherwell makes his debut appearance for Scotland in a 1-0 loss to Denmark. Tom was to win 22 caps (21 with Rangers) and played at the 1978 World Cup.

Player #37. June 9th 1971 and Jocky Scott of Dundee makes his debut appearance for Scotland in a 1-0 loss to Denmark. Jocky’s 2nd and final cap was won five days later v USSR. I don’t have a photo of him in Scotland colours.

Player #38. June 14th 1971 and John Brownlie of Hibernian makes his debut appearance for Scotland in a 1-0 loss to the USSR in Moscow. John only won seven caps in total.

Player #39. June 14th 1971 and Bobby Watson of Motherwell makes his only appearance for Scotland in a 1-0 loss to the USSR in Moscow. This was to be Bobby Brown’s last match in charge.

Player #40. October 13th, 1971 and the Tommy Docherty era begins with a 2-1 win over Portugal. Bob Wilson of Arsenal makes his debut but will only go on to win two caps.

Player #41. October 13th, 1971 and the Tommy Docherty era begins with a 2-1 win over Portugal. Making his first appearance in the 1970s is Eddie Colquhoun of Sheffield United. Eddie was winning his third cap having played in the 1967 World tour. He was to win 11 caps altogether.

Player #42. October 13th, 1971 and the Tommy Docherty era begins with a 2-1 win over Portugal. Alex Cropley of Hibernian makes his debut but will only go on to win two caps.


Player #43. October 13th, 1971 and the Tommy Docherty era begins with a 2-1 win over Portugal. George Graham of Arsenal makes his debut and will go on to win 13 caps.

Player #44. October 13th, 1971 and the Tommy Docherty era begins with a 2-1 win over Portugal. Martin Buchan of Aberdeen makes his debut and will go on to win 34 caps.

Player #45. November 10th, 1971 and Scotland beat Belgium 1-0 at Pittodrie. Making his one and only appearance for Scotland that night is Steve Murray of Aberdeen.

Player #46. November 10th, 1971 and Scotland beat Belgium 1-0 at Pittodrie. Making his debut was Kenny Dalglish of Celtic. Kenny went on to be the most capped Scotland player of all time with 102 caps, netting a joint record haul of 30 goals.

Player #47. November 10th, 1971 and Scotland beat Belgium 1-0 at Pittodrie. Making his debut was John Hansen of Partick Thistle. John was only to win two caps. Don’t have a photo in Scotland colours, so a Jags one with a big Thistle badge will have to do.

Player #48. April 26th, 1972 and Scotland beat Peru 2-0 at Hampden. Making his debut that night was Ally Hunter of Kilmarnock. Ally went on to win four caps.

Player #49. April 26th, 1972 and Scotland beat Peru 2-0 at Hampden. Also making his debut that night was Willie Donachie of Manchester City. Willie went on to win 35 caps.

Player #50. April 26th, 1972 and Scotland beat Peru 2-0 at Hampden. Making his first appearance in the 1970s is Willie Morgan of Manchester United. This was his eight cap and he went on to win 27 caps in total.

Player #51. April 26th, 1972 and Scotland beat Peru 2-0 at Hampden. Also making his debut that night was Asa Hartford of West Brom. Asa went on to win 50 caps.

Player #52. April 26th, 1972 and Scotland beat Peru 2-0 at Hampden. Making his first appearance in the 1970s is the great Denis Law of Manchester United. Denis was winning his 43rd of 55 caps and is of course joint all time goalscorer with Kenny Dalglish with 30 goals.
